Searching for my father’s records: (150446) Flt Lieutenant J M Stone 171 Squadron, shot down over Munster on 7 March 1945, POW, escaped to American Lines.
Can you assist?
Regards
Jonathan Stone

Hi Jonathan, hopefully I can. My first question is was he actually a POW, or did he crash, evade capture and get to the US lines? I ask because I can find no POW listing for him. although his time may have been short in a camp if he escaped.
I assume he is a British Airman, often they combined Australian and New Zealand Airmen in crews with Brits. If he isn’t British there are different places to look for records.
If he was a POW, he may have completed a POW Liberation report. This will be at the British National Archives, can be ordered online and takes several days to get. It may or may not have good information depending on how detailed they were when completing. Looks like the Liberation Report, if there is one, is at catalogue reference WO 344/306/1. You can go here http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/ and put the WO344/306/1 into the “go to reference” box to get to the record, them order from there if you choose.
If he was a POW for long enough the International Red Cross may have some info on him. http://www.icrc.org/web/forms/webforms.nsf/F_Archive?OpenForm&ParentUNID=FC2FA71E2991A657C12572E200322DD7
His service records will be at the Ministry of Defence (MOD), they cost 30pounds to get and take 9-12 months. http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/AboutDefence/WhatWeDo/Personnel/ServiceRecords/MakingARequestForInformationHeldOnThePersonnelRecordsOfDeceasedServicePersonnel.htm

No 171 Squadron was formed at Gatwick in June, 1942 as a tactical reconnaissance unit of Army Co-operation Command. It began operations in October 1942, flying along the coast of France. It was disbanded and its equipment was passed to No 430 Squadron RCAF.
in September 1944 Flight C of No 199 Squadron was detached and became No 171 Squadron at North Creake, in No 100 Group. No 171 was engaged in bomber support duties, dropping ‘window’ to foil enemy radar. The squadron was disbanded on 27th July 1945.
Airfields No. 171 Squadron flew from:
RAF Gatwick from 15th June 1942 (Army Co-operation Command. Tomahawks, Mustangs)
disbanded 31st December 1942
RAF North Creake, Norfolk from the 8th September 1944. (re-formed, Bomber Command. Stirling III, Halifax III)
disbanded 27th July 1945
Hope this helps, let me know on those questions and we’ll make certain we are going in the right direction. All this info is for a british airman.
